PreS-Gr. 2. Henry is not a morning rooster. He likes to stay up late. But when his dad is away at a convention, Henry has to crow the farm awake. The trouble is, Henry can't rise at the crack of dawn, because he spends his nights playing cards with the goats, dancing with the cows, popping corn with the pigs, and reading his book. When his mother wakes him, he drags himself up to the barn roof and croaks "Cock-a (yawn)-doodle-doodle (yawn)-do." The week is a disaster. None of the animals are fed on time, and children miss the school bus. Then a wise old goat helps him find the perfect solution. Some pictures are too crowded and busy, but the barnyard farce is lots of fun. The bright line-and-watercolor illustrations and the lively text catch the wry comedy of the rebel's failure to drag himself out of bed, do his duty, and conform. PreS-Gr 2 -Henry is definitely not an early bird. His preferred schedule is to play card games with the goats and dance with the cows all night long and then sleep during the day. When his father sets off to attend a Roosters' Union Convention, Henry is left in charge of waking up the farm. Trouble ensues when he sleeps in and his feeble "Cock-a(yawn)-(yawn)doodle-(yawn)do" fails to wake up the sun. Farmyard chaos reigns until the sleep-deprived chicken decides to embrace his circadian rhythm. He stays up later than ever before and just before falling asleep at dawn, he crows with all his might. Cassidy's acrylic illustrations are full of visual humor, from the baggy-eyed, droopy-combed Henry, to his messy coop strewn with Fly magazines and animal posters. The vivid images and well-paced text make this a fun read-aloud.-Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada
