Called to investigate a college shooting, Rebus and his partner, DS Siobhan Clarke, find complete carnage: two dead, bloodied boys, one of whom is Rebus's cousin once removed. A third boy has suffered serious injuries and is taken to the hospital, unable to speak. The suspected shooter (an ex-commando) appears to have taken his own life. Upon closer inspection, Rebus notices that a highly trained assassin died with tears in his eyes.
